AVIXA AV ESSENTIALS TRAINING
Local 31 will be hosting the Avixa (formerly Infocomm) AV Essentials course Aug 19-20 and 26-27, 2019. This course is open to all personnel working under IATSE Local 31 agreements. It is an intensive 4 day in classroom course that requires multiple pre and post requisite training courses to be completed online to complete. The class is limited to 12 people who must commit to being there all 4 days. Course participants will not be compensated for attendance nor will they be offered any calls by the call steward on those dates. Attendees will be credited with hours toward seniority. Attendees will be chosen by seniority and prior skill sets. If interest is sufficient future classes will be scheduled. Everyone who registers, whether they are accepted for the class or not, will receive a free membership to Avixa that will give them access to other online training and benefits.
Please read the following description and then follow the instructions below to register.
Description
AV Essentials has been designed by an IATSE working group along with Avixa in order to enhance and develop AV skills in our workforce. In preparation of this curriculum, special attention has been given to fulfill some of the IATSE contract’s audiovisual skill set requirements.
We will review connectors, cables, adaptors and their application, signal flow, audio and microphone techniques, projection, screen set-up, computer use (both Mac OS and Windows OS), and simple networking. PowerPoint, Keynote, and other presentation platforms will be taught. We will also discuss wireless control of presentations (e.g. the use of iPhones and iPads to wirelessly control presentations).
Troubleshooting sessions for all of the above areas will be presented where the students will have to find and correct problems in all set-ups.
We will emphasize appearance, hospitality, and customer relations throughout the four-day, hands-on training and will have a classroom presentation emphasizing these issues. Students will also be required to dress as they would for an AV call the day of their practical exam and will be graded on appearance and Customer Relations Skills.
For the practical test set-up, each student will receive an AV breakout room scenario to complete within 45 minutes. The student will be graded on the quality of the work that they complete and on how well they handle customer service responses.
Our intention for the hands-on training is to provide as much one-on-one instruction as possible during the four day session. For this reason, as well as equipment and instructor availability, class size is limited to 28 students per session. Classes will be split into two groups of 14. While one group is learning hands-on, the other will be in lecture or “how-to” classes. Instructors will be assigned to each class along with a minimum of four Local Senior AV Techs assisting. These Senior Techs must participate in an AV Essentials Curriculum Orientation before the class and commit to teaching the AV Essentials Curriculum at the local level.
Goals
To provide a pathway for IATSE members and referrals who have few or no AV skills with training that leads to a Basic AV Certificate and provides necessary skills for work in the AV Industry.
